 Script for Doctoral Defense

1. The Chair of the Thesis Committee

- welcomes those present and introduces the members of the Committee,

- asks the secretary of the Committee to present the academic biography of the candidate,

- and invites the candidate to present her/his doctoral thesis and new scientific results in a free presentation (of 25 minutes maximum length).

2. The candidate presents her/his thesis, highlighting her/his new scientific achievements.

3. The Chair invites the referees individually to present their written reports on the thesis.

4. The referees present their opinions.

5. The Chair invites the candidate to answer the questions by the referees.

6. The candidate answers the questions put forward by the referees.

7. The Chair invites the members of the Thesis Committee, as well as those present, to ask their questions regarding the doctoral thesis.

8. The candidate answers the questions on the spot.

9. After each answer, the Chair asks whether the answer was satisfactory. In the event of a negative response, he gives the opportunity for discussion, which can be curtailed by the Chair if necessary.

10. After the questions and answers, the Chair invites the members of the Thesis Committee and those present to make comments if they wish. The candidate responds to the comments (if necessary) immediately on the spot.

11. If any of the Referees is not a member of the Committee, the Chair publicly asks whether she/he recommends the award of the doctoral degree. The Referee answers the question by yes or no.

12. The Chair closes the discussion and orders a closed session of the Thesis Committee.

13. At the closed session, the Chair opens a discussion, where the Thesis Committee shall evaluate the thesis and the new scientific achievements included therein, by secret ballots using a 1-2-3-4-5 points system. The Thesis Committee either recommends awarding the doctoral degree, which requires obtaining at least 70% of the points available, or recommends a rejection. The Committee prepares its written proposal with justification for the Doctoral Council (HBDT).

14. The Chair reopens the public defence, and announces the recommendation together with its justification.

15. The Chair closes the public defence.
